October 19, 2008
I was surfing this weekend and found three of my favorite Saturday Night Live skits:
“Clarence the 5th Beatle” with Eddie Murphy:
“The Continental” with Christopher Walken:

Another Web Nugget
September 4, 2008
I just refound a nugget on the internet that I originally came across a few years ago and thought that I would share. I enjoy a plane landing just as much as the next guy, but I am not sure that even I would want to sit on this beach in the Caribbean!
This is a video of an airport in St. Maarten in the Caribbean where the landing strip is right next to the beach and the planes land right over the folks on the beach. The FAA would never allow this in the US. Kind of a pity.
Here is some video:
Here are a few pictures:

Weird Internet Stuff
March 16, 2008
I was sitting here today taking a little break from writing my dissertation and came across another very strange internet video that I have to share. Japanese is not one of the languages that I can inderstand so I have to guess that this is some sort of Japanese game show where there is a group of Japanese folks that are doing an impression of the USA of Africa video for “We are the World”. You have to see it for yourself.
Very strange, very strange indeed:
Charities Worthy of Note
November 25, 2007
We have been really enjoying watching “The Unit” lately and I thought that I might want to publicize a few charities, one supporting the children of special forces soldiers, that we have known about and supported over the course of the last few years. We believe strongly that it is our obligation to give every year to a number of charities that are doing good work and improving the lives of those less fortunate.
The first highlighted charity is the
Special Operations Warrior Foundation
This foundation provides free college scholarship grants (not loans) along with financial aid and educational counseling to the children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps Special Operations Soldiers that are killed in an operational mission or training accident. This group provides much needed assistance to children that have lost a parent and families that have lost their primary supporter in the service our our country. Please consider helping if you can.
The Salvation Army
What can you say about this organization that has not been said one hundred times over in the past? They are always there when they are needed and give generously to those less fortunate. Whether it is a soup kitchen, helping victims of the recent Southern California wildfires or running a home for battered women, the Salvation Army is providing assistance to the less-fortunate every day and for this we should support them.
Doctors Without Borders
This independent international medical humanitarian organization provides emergency medical aid to people around the globe that have been effected by armed conflict, epidemics, disasters and lack of medical resources. They work alongside locally hired staff to accomplish humanitarian goals worldwide.
LA Rescue Mission
The LA rescue mission is a religious-centered aid organization based in Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles that provides food, shelter and counseling. They are focused on meeting the spiritual, physical, educational and social rehabilitational needs of the people on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. Operating for more than 70 years, the LA Rescue Mission has been a positive force and a bright light in difficult times for an innumerable number of people in that time.
Toys for Tots
An organization started by and maintained by the US Marine Corps and US Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots’ objectives are, as written on their website, “to help needy children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable natural resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.” This is something that we all should be able to get behind. As new parents, there is nothing more heart-wrenching than the idea of not being able to give the joy of a Christmas gift to your child. Your donation can bring the Joy of Christmas to a child and can save a needy parent from the pain of having to tell their child that they cannot afford Christmas.
These are just a few of the charities on our annual donation list. I may add a few more later if I have the time. Until then, don’t forget to think about others as we enter this blessed Holiday Season.
Various Items from the Good Ideas to WTF…
November 16, 2006
I have come across a few different things over the last few weeks that either deserve a little bit of attention or I just wanted to share with the public.
From the Very Good Idea/Resource files:
The first item pertains to cycling, one of my present passions. Are you interested in cycling to work in LA but didn’t know enough about the routes or traffic to really feel safe doing so? There is a program called Roll with It run through the C.I.C.L.E. (Cyclists Inciting Change through LIVE Exchange) that will set you up with a Bicycle Commuting Coach/Mentor to help you plan your route and to actually ride with you to work. The program is free and is a good way to give bicycle commuting a try with the support of a more experienced cyclist. You may find that you get to work faster and feel better once you get there than when you commute by car or SUV. You will also be doing the city a favor by reducing traffic, smog and fossil fuels consumption. If you are already bicycle commuter in LA, why not sign up to be a Mentor and help spread bicycle commuting across Los Angeles?
From the Very Cool but WTF File:
KFC has earned the destinction of being the first brand to be visible from space. Recently KFC built a corporate logo of Colonel Sanders near Area 51 in Nevada. The 87,500 square-foot logo was constructed of 1 foot by 1 foot individual tiles and can be seen on Google Earth very clearly. I first read about this on Amber Mac’s (from Call for Help on Canadian Tech TV) Webpage. She links to her original source, complete with time-lapse video, here. Very strange ambitions that some folks/companies have, but in some strange way, very, very Cool!
Update: It appears that the largest corporate logo seen from space may be the ReadyMix logo created on the Nullarbor plain of Australia in 1965. Well, maybe the KFC logo is the first color corporate logo seen from space?
